She was the daughter of Cadwalader ap Meredydd.

Evan Robert Lewis, fourth son, born circa 1585, died at Fron Goch, in the parish of Llanderfel in the Comot of Penllyn, Merionethshire, circa 1662. One of the early manuscript pedigrees of this family states the Evan Robert Lewis removed from Rhiwlas to Fron Goch. Rhiwlas is the estate of the Price family, who came from Ysputty-Ievan. The farm called Fron Goch is partly in the township of Ucheldref, in Llanfor parish, and partly in Llandderfel. The farm of Fron Goch has always paid tithes to both churches. Evan Robert Lewis married Jane.

Burial: September 28, 1668, Llanfor Parish, Merionethshire Wales. Frongoch is a small town just north of the market town of Y Bala, today in the Welsh administrative district of Gwynedd. This village is the common origin of most of the first settlers of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania.

Evan Robert Lewis' wife Jane v. Cadwaladr was a descendant of the Price family who owned most of the lands in the part of Merionethshire from which the Gwynedd settlers came. A bit of her ancestry is HERE.

Rhys succeeded to the throne of Deheubarth on the death of his brother Maredudd in 1155. It was a remarkably peaceful and bloodless succession. Between 1158 and 1165 Rhys was under heavy pressure from Henry II. He was persuaded to submit, despite the loss of territory involved when Ceredigion and Cantref Bychan were restored to their Norman lords. Immediate retaliation by Rhys and his kinsmen, an attempt to take Carmarthen in 1159, and a successful attack on Llandovery in 1162 pointed for Henry II a recurrent danger. The Welsh prince would not accept an enhanced Anglo-Norman presence in West Wales. For Rhys, submission and defiance were part of the dynamic border conflict. In the late 1160s the political climate in south Wales changed and Henry had ot reassess the place of the Welsh prince and the marcher lords in his polity.

The change sprung from Richard Stongbow's interest in Ireland. Ireland was a magnet for men from west Wales, and in particular for the sons and grandsons of Nest, daughter of Rhys ap Tewdwr. To check their independence in Ireland, Henry embarked on his own expedition in 1171; he and his successors retained a close interest in the Irish lands conquered by Anglo-Norman settlers, and royal officials played an important part in their affairs. In Wales, it was a valuable expedient for the king and the prince of Deheubarth to make common cause; how soon this was mooted is hard to say, but by the autumn of 1171 the terms of their rapprochement had been agreed. For Rhys, the first and most important result was the confirmation of his tenure of the lands he had conquered, Ceredigion, Cantref Bychan, Emlyn and two commotes near Carmarthen. The final confirmation on his standing came with the style justiciar for south Wales; an English title which carried the clear delegation of royal authority was used to cover jurisdiction over Welsh leaders and communities which looked to Rhys from the lordships of Gwynllwg, Usk, Caerleon, Glamorgan, Elfael and Maelienydd.

While Henry lived, Rhys was a trusted agent and ally. For his part, Rhys was content to make the most of his relationship with the king, but he continued to think and act as an independent Welsh prince. He rebuilt Cardigan Castle for his own use, and he used marriage alliances to consolidate his position. As the 12th century drew to a close, Rhys was once again engaged in campaigning against the crown and the greater lords of the southern march, and at the same time he was deeply implicated in internal feuds among his kindred. These struggles presaged the decline of his dynasty and the eclipse of his kingdom. By the time of his death in 1197 he had been an active participant in war and politics for sixty years, and he had been the dominate ruling prince in Wales for more than forty years.

Rhys had probably intended that his eldest legitimate son, Gruffudd ap Rhys would inherit the kingdom, but his succession was challenged by two other sons, Maelgwyn ap Rhys (d. 1231) and Rhys Gryg (d. 1223). A vigorous struggle ensued, and castles were captured and recaptured in a period of prolonged conflict between the brothers, and -after the death of Gruffudd - his sons Rhys Ieunanc ap Gruffudd and Owain ap Gruffydd. The main beneficiaries of this tragic conflict within Deheubarth were outsiders. The English king, Anglo-Norman lords of the March and native Welsh neighbours, all took advantage until once again the days of independence seemed numbered. Finally, it was by the power of the prince of Gwynedd, llywelyn ap Iorwerth, that a settlement was made in 1216. He induced the claimants to accept a tripartite partition of Deheubarth. They were all now rulers by the grace of llywelyn, diminished in stature and relegated to a lesser role in history. Deheubarth was never to recover the status it had enjoyed under the Lord Rhys. Despite this, it was in these decades that Dinefwr castle (principle stronghold of Lord Rhys) achieved its mighty masonry construction before being eventually lost to King Edward I.

In 1198 William Martin made an exchange of lands in Combs Martin, in Devon, with Warin de Morsells, who had married his sister Sybil. He married Ankaret, daughter of Rhys ap Griffith, Prince of Wales, but in 1191 Rhys, contrary to his oath, expelled William Martin from the Castle of Nevern, giving it to his own son Griffin. Gruffydd fuled mainly Cantref Mawr (1116-1137) and died in battle in 1137.

After his death in 1137 his four sons worked closely together to defend and consolidate their territory. Each son, Anarawd, Cadell, Maredudd and Rhys took the lead in succession, and there seems to have been no discord between them. Their raids extended from west Wales to the lordship of Glamorgan. Anarawd was assassinated by men from north Wales in 1143; Cadell and his younger brothers achieved the reconquest of Ceredigion, making it once more part of Deheubarth, before Cadell was wounded so severly by normans from Tenby that he was effectively removed from the political scene. Maredudd died in 1155, leaving Rhys as ruler of the southern kingdom.

1 William succeeded his father as Lord of Abergavenny (right), Builth and other Marcher Lordships in1227. Styled by the Welsh as "Black William" he was imprisoned by Llewelyn ap Iorwerth in 1229 during Hubert de Burgh's disastrous Kerry (Ceri) campaign. He was ransomed and released after a short captivity during which he agreed to cede Builth as a marriage portion for his daughter Isabella on her betrothal to David, son and heir of Llewelyn. The following Easter, Llewelyn discovered an intrigue between his wife, Joan, and William. Supported by a general clamour for his death, Llewelyn had William publicly hanged on 2nd May 1230.

1 After Llewelyn Fawr had hanged Eva's husband, William, he wrote letters (see translations) to her and her brother, William, Earl of Pembroke. He was inquiring whether the marriage between his son, Dafydd, and Isabella de Braose should still go ahead. Evidently they agreed that it should. Nevertheless Llewelyn and Dafydd were never satisfied with the distribution of William's lands among his four heiresses and this led to further armed conflicts in the marches. Eva continued to hold Braose lands and castles in her own right after the death of her husband. Dugdale mentions her as holder of Totnes in 1230. It is recorded in the Close Rolls (1234-7) that Henry III granted 12 marks to her to strengthen the castle at Hay.

Owain succeeded his father, Gruffydd ap Cyanan as ruler of Gwynedd in 1138. His 32 year reign was a bloody and turbulent time of constant warfare between the Norman barons and the Welsh chieftans. Though he strived during his rule for both the prosperity of his people and the unity of all Welsh kingdoms against the English, his aims were hindered by the treacherous feuding within his own ranks. Although well known for his fierce and brutal penalties for disloyalty, he was nevertheless remembered as a mighty soldier and a great leader by his own people, and considered the King of Wales by those in England and other lands. He was said to have 17 sons and at least 2 daughters, although few were considered legitimate by the churchmen of his time. This led to a civil war between his sons at his death in 1169.

One of his sons, Madoc, possibly discovered America about 1170, returned to Wales and then left for America again to settle with some of his countrymen to escape the civil war in Wales. The possible destination was Mobile Bay, Alabama where ruins of three pre-Columbian forts have been found by archaeologists. The first of these forts found on top of Lookout Mountain, near DeSoto Falls, Alabama, was found to be nearly identical in setting, layout and method of construction to Dolwyddelan Castle in Gwynedd, the presumed birthplace of Madoc. Later they moved to Fort Mountain, Georgia atop a 3000 foot mountain with a main defensive wall 855 feet long. Finally they moved north to the forks of the Duck River near present day Manchester, TN and built a fort with 20 feet high stone walls containing 50 acres and protected by a moat 1200 feet long. These Welsh were later driven to Missouri and west by the Cherokee, where they blended into the Indians there (according to Cherokee legend and John Sevier). John Sevier was told by Oconostota (Cherokee headman) that the Whites followed the Tennessee River down to the Ohio, up the Ohio to the missouri, then up the Missouri...for a great distance...but they are no more White people; they are now all become Indians..." The most likely tribe to have assimilated them are the Mandan, a tribe that was more or less wiped out in a small pox epidemic in 1837. This story of course is a controversy amongst Historians.

Isabella died 31 May 1246 in Fonteurault, Maine-et-Loire,FR, at 57 years of age. Isabelle married Hugh de Lusignan four years after the death of her husband. She left her youngest daughter, Eleanor, back in England to be raised by her half-sister Joan who was King John and Clementia's daughter. She probably left all of her children by King John in England, but I need to verify this. She had nine more children by Hugh de Lusignan, Count of La Marche: Hugh, Guy, Geoffrey,

William, Aymer, Isabella, Alice, Margaret and Agatha. Also known as John Plantagenet, John reigned from May 27, 1199 till his death on Oct. 18-19, 1216. He was the youngest son of Henry II and Eleanor. His birthdate is also listed as 1167 in CD-102, Warren's book "King John"., and the "Kings & Queens of England & Scotland." He was an unpopular King largely due to the fact that he was not the great fighter kings were expected to be at the time. He is listed as hedonistic, unstable and unforgiving. At the same time he was highly intelligent, efficient, sophisticated, well educated in law and government and he loved to read often carrying books with him on his travels.

Much of his troubles sprang from problems that grew during his father's and brother's reign. He lost ground to Phillip II of France. He lost political power with the Pope. His barons rebelled and forced restoration

Shadow". The fact that she was English, made her unpopular in Wales. Those who were close to her though loved her dearly for her gentle, kind ways. Some of her step sons, Gruffydd, in particular, never liked her because of her English heritage.

Sunon died 1265 at 56 years of age. The peerage, De Montford, Earl of Leicester, was created in 1206 and forfeited in 1265. According to a fictionalized account, "Falls the Shadow", Eleanor was betrothed to William Marshall at a very young age for political and monetary reasons. As most all royal marriages occured in this way, it was perfectly normal. Her marriage to William ended when she was only 15 at her husbands death. She was then convinced by a very close caretaker to take the oath of fidelity from the Pope. This gave her many of the vows of
a nun. She never fit well into this as she was a very beautiful blond haired women who enjoyed the company of men. Though she religiously upheld her vows, she fell hopelessly in love with Simon de Monfert after reaching the age of adulthood. They married secretly with the forced assistance of her brother, King Henry. Simon then convinced the Pope with monetary gifts to rescind his wife's vow of Abstinence. This was to say a very scandalous set of circumstances. Simon de Montfert was well below Eleanor's social status to add to boot. This is a love conquers all theme in the novel "Falls the Shadow."

1 At his peak Lord of Bramber, Gower, Abergavenny, Brecknock, Builth, Radnor, Kington, Limerick and the three castles of Skenfrith, Grosmont (right) and Whitecastle. William inherited Bramber, Builth and Radnor from his father; Brecknock and Abergavenny through his mother. He was the strongest of the Marcher Lords involved in constant war with the Welsh and other lords. He was particularly hated by the Welsh for the massacre of three Welsh princes, their families and their men which took place during a feast at his castle of Abergavenny in 1175. He was sometimes known as the "Ogre of Abergavenny". One of the Normans' foremost warriors, he fought alongside K.Richard at Chalus in 1199 (when Richard received his fatal wound). William received Limerick in 1201 from K. John. He was also given custody of Glamorgan, Monmouth and Gwynllwg in return for large payments. William captured Arthur, Count of Brittany at Mirebeau in 1202 and was in charge of his imprisonment for King John. He was well rewarded in February 1203 with the grant of Gower. In the 9th of the latter king's reign, Walter de Lacie obtained a confirmation of his lands and dominion of Meath in Ireland, to be held by him and his heirs for the service of 50 knights' fees; as also his fees in Fingall, in the valley of Dublin, to be held by the service of seven knights' fees. Owain succeeded his father, Gruffydd ap Cyanan as ruler of Gwynedd in 1138. His 32 year reign was a bloody and turbulent time of constant warfare between the Norman barons and the Welsh chieftans. Though he strived during his rule for both the prosperity of his people and the unity of all Welsh kingdoms against the English, his aims were hindered by the treacherous feuding within his own ranks. Although well known for his fierce and brutal penalties for disloyalty, he was nevertheless remembered as a mighty soldier and a great leader by his own people, and considered the King of Wales by those in England and other lands. He was said to have 17 sons and at least 2 daughters, although few were considered legitimate by the churchmen of his time. This led to a civil war between his sons at his death in 1169.

One of his sons, Madoc, possibly discovered America about 1170, returned to Wales and then left for America again to settle with some of his countrymen to escape the civil war in Wales. The possible destination was Mobile Bay, Alabama where ruins of three pre-Columbian forts have been found by archaeologists. The first of these forts found on top of Lookout Mountain, near DeSoto Falls, Alabama, was found to be nearly identical in setting, layout and method of construction to Dolwyddelan Castle in Gwynedd, the presumed birthplace of Madoc. Later they moved to Fort Mountain, Georgia atop a 3000 foot mountain with a main defensive wall 855 feet long. Finally they moved north to the forks of the Duck River near present day Manchester, TN and built a fort with 20 feet high stone walls containing 50 acres and protected by a moat 1200 feet long. These Welsh were later driven to Missouri and west by the Cherokee, where they blended into the Indians there (according to Cherokee legend and John Sevier). John Sevier was told by Oconostota (Cherokee headman) that the Whites followed the Tennessee River down to the Ohio, up the Ohio to the missouri, then up the Missouri...for a great distance...but they are no more White people; they are now all become Indians..." The most likely tribe to have assimilated them are the Mandan, a tribe that was more or less wiped out in a small pox epidemic in 1837. This story of course is a controversy amongst Historians.

Henry II of England (5 March 1133-6 July 1189) ruled as Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy, and as King of England (1154–1189) and, at various times, controlled parts of Wales, Scotland[citation needed], eastern Ireland, and western France. His sobriquets include "Curt Mantle" (because of the practical short cloaks he wore), "Fitz Empress", and sometimes "The Lion of Justice", which had also applied to his grandfather Henry I. He ranks as the first of the Plantagenet or Angevin Kings. Following the disputed reign of King Stephen, Henry's reign saw efficient consolidation. Henry II has acquired a reputation as one of England's greatest medieval kings.

Joan was born at Angers, in Anjou, and spent her youth at her mother's courts at Winchester and Poitiers. In 1176, King William II of Sicily sent ambassadors to the English court to ask for Joan's hand in marriage. The betrothal was confirmed on May 20, and on August 27 Joan set sail for Sicily, escorted by the bishop of Norwich and her uncle, Hamelin de Warenne, 5th Earl of Surrey. In Saint Gilles, her entourage was met by representatives of the Kingdom of Sicily: Alfano, Archbishop of Capua, and Richard Palmer, Bishop of Syracuse.

After a hazardous voyage, Joan arrived safely, and on February 13, 1177, she married William II of Sicily and was crowned Queen of Sicily at Palermo Cathedral. They had one son, Bohemond, born in 1181 and who died in infancy. Following William's death in 1189, she was kept a prisoner by the new king, Tancred of Sicily. Finally, her brother Richard I of England arrived in Italy in 1190, on the way to the Holy Land. He demanded her return, along with every penny of her dowry. When Tancred baulked at these demands, Richard seized a monastery and the castle of La Bagnara. He decided to spend the winter in Italy and attacked and subdued the city of Messina. Finally, Tancred agreed to the terms and sent Joan's dowry. In March 1191 Eleanor of Aquitaine arrived in Messina with Richard's bride, Berengaria of Navarre.

Eleanor returned to England, leaving Berengaria in Joan's care. Richard decided to postpone his wedding, put his sister and bride on a ship, and set sail. Two days later the fleet was hit by a fierce storm, destroying several ships and blew Joan and Berengaria's ship off course. Richard landed safely in Crete, but they were stranded near Cyprus. The self-appointed despot of Cyprus, Isaac Comnenus was just about to capture them when Richard's fleet suddenly appeared. The princesses were saved, but the despot made off with Richard's treasure. Richard pursued and captured Isaac, threw him into a dungeon, and sent Joan and Berengaria on to Acre.

Joan was Richard's favourite sister, but he was not above using her as a bargaining chip in his political schemes. He even suggested marrying her to Saladin's brother, Al-Adil, and making them joint rulers of Jerusalem. This plan fell apart when Joan refused to marry a Muslim and Al-Adil refused to marry a Christian. King Philip II of France also expressed some interest in marrying her, but this scheme, too, failed (possibly on grounds of affinity, since Philip's father Louis VII had formerly been married to her mother). Instead Joan was married in 1196 to Raymond VI of Toulouse, with Quercy and the Agenais as her dowry. She was the mother of his successor Raymond VII of Toulouse (1197-1249).

This new husband treated her none too gently, however, and Joan came to fear him and his knights. In 1199, while pregnant with a second child, Joan was left to face alone a rebellion in which the lords of Saint-Félix-de-Caraman were prominent. She laid siege to their castle at les Cassès but was menaced by treachery. Escaping this threat, Joan travelled northwards, hoping for her brother's protection, but found him dead at Chalus.[1] She then fled to her mother Queen Eleanor's court at Rouen, where she was offered refuge and care. Joan asked to be admitted to Fontevrault Abbey, an unusual request for a married, pregnant woman, but this request was granted. She died in childbirth and was veiled a nun on her deathbed. Her son lived just long enough to be baptised (he was named Richard). Joan was thirty-three years old. She was buried at Fontevrault Abbey, and fifty years later her son Raymond VII would be interred next to her.

Rhys had probably intended that his eldest legitimate son, Gruffudd ap Rhys would inherit the kingdom, but his succession was challenged by two other sons, Maelgwyn ap Rhys (d. 1231) and Rhys Gryg (d. 1223). A vigorous struggle ensued, and castles were captured and recaptured in a period of prolonged conflict between the brothers, and -after the death of Gruffudd - his sons Rhys Ieunanc ap Gruffudd and Owain ap Gruffydd. The main beneficiaries of this tragic conflict within Deheubarth were outsiders. The English king, Anglo-Norman lords of the March and native Welsh neighbours, all took advantage until once again the days of independence seemed numbered. Finally, it was by the power of the prince of Gwynedd, llywelyn ap Iorwerth, that a settlement was made in 1216. He induced the claimants to accept a tripartite partition of Deheubarth. They were all now rulers by the grace of llywelyn, diminished in stature and relegated to a lesser role in history. Deheubarth was never to recover the status it had enjoyed under the Lord Rhys. Despite this, it was in these decades that Dinefwr castle (principle stronghold of Lord Rhys) achieved its mighty masonry construction before being eventually lost to King Edward I.
