http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cutbirth&id=I0994

(Christy Westell, Worldconnect, Cutbirth database):

DANIEL BOONE CUTBIRTH, SR. was born about 1762/1763 in Rowan County, North Carolina, married to Elizabeth (Betsy) Coleman about 1784 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Daniel and Betsy lived in Wilkes County until the early 1790's when they began to follow Daniel's father, Benjamin, Sr., as he migrated his way west. In 1794 they were in Johnson County, Tennessee, 1795 in Washington County, Tennessee and 1796 in Carter County, Tennessee. In 1798, Daniel was with a settlement in Tennessee along the Roane Creek and Little Dan River. In 1802 they moved to Knox County, Kentucky and remained there until 1807 when they moved south to Maury County, Tennessee. In the Maury County Records-Clerk and Master's Office, Columbia, Tennessee Daniel Cutbirth was listed with one free poll in 1811. The Index Book of Maury County, Tennessee, Volume 1, Book B, page 52, shows that on December 17, 1815 Daniel Cutbirth bought one case of wool at the sale of William Grimes. Daniel was in Giles County, Tennessee in 1819, signing a land speculators petition on October 5th. The 1820 federal census finds Daniel still living in Giles County and he continues to live there until the time of his death sometime in 1839.

In the first part of this minute book dated December 31, 1838 was the first mention of the death of Daniel Cutbirth and the appointment of George T. Malone as the Administrator.

Giles County Chancery Court Record, Pulaski, Tennessee, Book A, page 368:

George T. Malone, administrator of Daniel Cutbirth estate sold the land at public auction on the north courthouse steps.

Giles County, Tennessee Deed Book S, page 9:

Betsy Cutbirth makes an agreement with Alexander W. Scott dated 1846--by the decree of Chancery Court, March Session 1846, it decreed that the dower of the estate left by Daniel Cutbirth, dec'd., husband of Betsy Cutbirth, be set aside for her as his widow. It was a third interest in land owned by Daniel Cutbirth in Giles County, Tennessee. The land was Big Creek and he had a mill on the creek. Betsy sold her lifetime interest in the land or her dower--sold to Alexander Scott with the agreement that she would make her home with the Scott family.

Old Well Cemetery (Just over in Hickmnan County, formerly part of Maury County):

Elizabeth Cutbirth, consort of Daniel Cutbirth, Sr.

Born 20 Feb 1763

Died Apr 1847

It is believed that Daniel Cutbirth, Sr. is buried in the Old Major Howell Cemetery, but that Betsy was buried in Old Well Cemetery because it was near the Alexander Scott's with whom she had been residing in her last days. (Later information from a locally published Giles County, TN family history book, "TWIGS AND BRANCHES", by Estelle Cosby, states that Daniel Boone Cutbirth, Sr. was buried in Gibsonville Cemetery, Campbellsville, TN with no marker.)

Daniel and Betsy had at least eleven children, and it is thought there was probably twelve, but the name of the twelfth one is not known.

Notes for GEORGE CORSON:

[Gale_M_Roberts.ged]

He was a cultured scholar. Had remarkable mathematical talent. He engaged in storekeeping with Jonathan Maulsby and Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. After the death of his father in law he bought the homestead and limestone quarries and continued the business.

He built Abolition Hall, Plymouth Meeting PA in 1858. He was a member of Plymouth Friends Meeting.

William Still (The Underground Railroad, 1886): "There were perhaps few more devoted men than George Corson to the interests of the oppressed everywhere. The slave, fleeting from his master ever found a home with him, and felt while there that no slave-hunter would get him away until every means of protection should fail. He was ever ready to send his horse and carriage to convey them on the road to Canada, or elsewhere towards freedom. his home was always open to entertain the anti-slavery advocates, and being warmly supported in the cause by his excellent wife, everythingwhich they could do to make their guests comfortable was done. The Bruleighs, J. Miller McKim, Mis Mary Grew, F. Douglass, and others will not soon forget that hospitable home. It is to be regretted that he died before the emancipation of the slaves, which he had so long labored for arrived. In this connection it may not be improper to state that simultaeously with his labors in the Anti-slavery cause, he was also laboring with zeal in the cause of Temperance. Of his efforts in that direction through nearly thirty years, our space will not allow us to speak. his life and labors were a daily protest against the traffic of rum. There is also another phase of his character which should be mentioned. Whenever he saw animals abused, horses beaten, he instantly interfered, often at great risk of personal harm from the brutal drivers about the lime quarries and iron ore diggings. So firm, so determined was he, that the cruellest ruffian felt that he must yield or confront the law. Take him all for all, there will rarely be found in one man more universal benevolence and justice than was possessed by the subject of this notice."

William Still:

GEORGE CORSON

Was born in Plymouth township, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, January 24th, 1803. He was the son of Joseph and Hannah Corson. He was married January 24th, 1832, to Martha, daughter of Samuel and Susanna Maulsby.

There were perhaps few more devoted men than George Corson to the interests of the oppressed everywhere. The slave, fleeting from his master, ever found a home with him, and felt while there that no slave-hunter would get him away until every means of protection should fail. He was ever ready to send his horse and carriage to convey them on the road to Canada, or elsewhere towards freedom. His home was always open to entertain the anti-slavery advocates, and being warmly supported in the cause by his ex-cellent wife, everything which they could do to make their guests comfort-able was done. The Burleighs, J. Miller McKim, Miss Mary Grew, F. Douglass, and others will not soon forget that hospitable home. It is to be regretted that he died before the emancipation of the slaves, which he had so long labored for, arrived. In this connection it may not be improper to state that simultaneously with his labors in the Anti-slavery cause, he was also laboring with zeal in the cause of Temperance. So firm, so determined was he, that the cruellest ruffian felt that he, must yield or confront the law. Take him all for all, there will rarely be found in one man more universal benevolence and justice than was possessed by the subject of this notice.

Hiram Corson, brother of the subject of this sketch, and a faithful co-46

laborer in the cause, in response to a request that he would furnish a reminiscence touching his brother's agency in assisting fugitives, wrote as follows:

November 1st, 1871.

DEAR ROBERT:-Wm. Still wishes some account of the case of the negro slave taken from our neighborhood some years ago, after an attempt by my brother George to release him. (About thirty years ago.) George had been on a visit to our brother Charles, living at the fork of the Skippack and Per-kiomen Creeks, in this county, and on his return, late in the afternoon, while coming along an obscure road, not the main direct road, he came up to a man on horseback, who was followed at a distance of a few feet by a colored man with a rope tied around his neck, and the other end held by the person on horseback.

George had had experience with those slave-drivers before, as in the case of John and James Lewis, and withal had become deeply interested in the Anti-slavery cause. He, therefore, inquired of the mounted man, what the other had done that he was to be thus treated. He quietly remarked that he was his slave and had run away. He then asked by what authority he held him. He said by warrant from Esquire Vanderslice. Indignant at this great outrage, my brother hurried on to Norristown, and waited his arrival with a process to arrest him. The slave-master, confident in his rights, bold in the country of those pretended freemen, who were ever ready to kiss the rod of Slavery, came slowly riding into Norristown, just before sunset, with the rope still fast to the slave's neck. He was immediately taken before a Justice of the Peace, whose name I do not now remember. The people gathered around; anxious inquiries were made as to the person who had the audacity to question the right of this quiet, peaceable man to do with his slave as he pleased. Great scorn was expressed for the busy Abolitionists. Much sympathy given to the abused slave owner. It was soon decided, by the aid of a volunteer lawyer, whose sons have since fought the battle for freedom, that the slave-owner had a right to take his slave where-ever, and in whatever way he pleased, through the country, and not only that, but at his call for help it was the bounden duty of every man, called upon to aid him; and the person who had the audacity to stop him was threatened with punishment.

But George's blood was up, so pained was he at the sight of a man, a poor man, a helpless man, being dragged through from Pennsylvania with a halter around his neck, that, amidst the jeers and insults of the debased crowd, he denounced Slavery, its aiders and abettors, in tones of scorn and loathing. But the man thief was left with his prey. Through the advice of those who stood by the slave laws and who knelt before the slave power, as personified by that hunter of slaves, the rope was taken from the neck,

and the man guarded while the master regaled himself. That night he dis-appeared with his man.

I can also give a few particulars of the escape of the Gorsuch murderers, from Norristown on their way to Canada. There should be a portrait of Daniel Ross, and a history of his labors during twenty or more years. Hundreds were entertained in his humble home, and it was in his home that the Gorsuch murderer was secreted. He must not be left out. I can also get the whole history, escape, capture, trial, conviction and redemption of James and John Lewis, and one other. They were captured here within sight of our house. George Corson, Esq., published it all, about ten years ago. Respectfully, ROBERT R. CORSON. HIRAM CORSON.

Notes for RICHARD MOORE:

http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/bucks/history/local/davis/davis50-51.txt

["I have twice been granted interviews by Alfred Moore, grandson of Richard, and learn from him that Richard Moore, while not ready to unite with the early Abolitionists in their revolutionary motto, 'No Union with slaveholders,' still felt prompted, by kind sympathy, to help on their way the escaping fugitives. His home soon became known to the Friends further south as a place where all fugitives forwarded would receive kindly care and needed assistance in continued flight. Although slaveholders rarely proceeded so far as this in pursuit of their slaves, they occasionally did so, and, more than once the master presented himself at the front door of Richard Moore, a few minutes after the object of his search, being warned of his approach, had escaped by a back door to a safe place of concealment in the rear. From a record he kept, the number of fugitive slaves he assisted to escape, down to the Civil war, was about six hundred."*]

[One of the slaves, who reached the Quakertown station about the time of the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law, 1850, had escaped from Abraham Shriner, Pipe creek, Maryland. At home he was known as "Bill Budd," but now assumed that of "Henry Franklin." He was employed as Richard Moore's carter several years, and, in this capacity, was enabled to assist on their way to Canada several fugitives. He was employed carting coal from the Lehigh to Quakertown, and, when there were fugitives to be sent forward, he would load his wagon with them in the evening, cover them with straw, take them up to the next station during the night, and return with a load of coal next day. It is thought one of the fugitives who then escaped was Parker, the principal hero of the Christiana tragedy. Franklin afterward became janitor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, where he died.*] (Bucks County History, 1901)

In a paper read before the Montgomery County Historical Society, by the late Dr. Hiram Corson, reference was made to several interesting cases of escaped slaves whom he forwarded to Richard Moore and others in Bucks county. The road, with its stations and substations, often took a zigzag direction to elude pursuit, or suit the convenience of the road agents.
