Roberts family of Gwynedd Pennsylvania
Gwynedd Friends Meeting Historical Notes
Descendants of Robert CADWALADER
one of the Roberts families of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania
Introduction from Howard Jenkins "Historical Collections of Gwynedd" (1897), chapter 14
It is designed in this chapter to give systematically what is known concerning the descendants of Robert Cadwalader, of Wales, whose children, in the Welsh manner, took the surname Robert, subsequently changed to Roberts. His sons were Cadwalader, Morris, Nicholas, John and Rowland, and he had one daughter, Elizabeth. All these, as well as their father, were in Gwynedd or Montgomery [township], within a few years after the earliest company of settlers. They came, there is good evidence to prove, from Bala, in Merionethshire; the journal of an English Friend, mentioning Rowland Robert's religious visit, speaks of Bala as his birthplace.
Cadwalader is said to have come with the first settlers in 1698, and there is reason to believe that he was accompanied by Morris. That they were among the company on the Robert and Elizabeth is not certain, but the family tradition is that upon the ship which brought them there was much sickness, and that Cadwalader, who was noted for his kind and benevolent character, was active in assisting those who were ill. Subsequently, the father, Robert Cadwalader, came over with his wife, and their other children: Nicholas, John, Rowland, and Elizabeth. Some of them, certainly John, settled first near Philadelphia, in Oxford township, but all of them had located in Gwynedd or Montgomery, within a few years after the first settlement. An old account book of Ellis Roberts, of Gwynedd, tailor (not of this family), shows that Morris Roberts bought buttons (Ellis spells it "butnes") of him, in the 9th mo., 1704, and that he had other dealings with Nicholas Roberts, as early as the 5th mo., 1705. Cadwalader's name appears as witness, on a marriage certificate, 3rd mo. 22, 1699. He bought land of Robert John in 1710, and his name is on the subscription paper for building the new meeting-house of 1712, - the subscriptions for the purpose being raised in 1710-11.
The parents, Robert Cadwalader and his wife, were old people when they came, and did not long survive. In the marriage certificate of their daughter Elizabeth, and Daniel Morgan, in 9th mo., 1718, Robert is spoken of as "late of Gwynedd," showing his death to have occurred previous to that time.
It is the tradition that none of the family were Friends at the time of their immigration, but if not, they soon joined the Society. John was married according to the order of Friends in 1706; Rowland in like manner in 1713; Cadwalader, in 1714; Nicholas in 1717; and Morris and Elizabeth, in 1718. Rowland was a minister among Friends, and so also was Elizabeth, as well as her husband Daniel Morgan.

Generation No. 1
1. ROBERT1 CADWALLADER was born Abt. 1650 near Bala, Merionethshire, Wales, and died probably in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia Co., PA before 1720 or perhaps January 1740 in Llanuwchllyn, Merionethshire, Wales. He married JANE JOHN Abt. 1672 in Wales, daughter of JOHN ap EVAN of Penmaen, Llanfawr (also called Llanfor), near Bala. She was born Abt. 1650 in Wales, and died possibly in Wales.
Howard Jenkins (1897): Robert Cadwalader, a man advanced in years, from one of the northern counties in Wales, immigrated with his wife (whose name is not definitely known) and three sons and a daughter (two sons having previously come), and settled about 1700, at Gwynedd. Both he and his wife suvived their removal but a few years.
History of the congregation of the Old Chapel , Llanuwchllyn, By R. T. Jenkins , (1937 ) - Page 28. It translates as follows - "It is interesting , while passing, to note the ones (reference to the Quakers) that went from Llanuwchllyn and Llangywer in these emigrations from 1682 - 1710. One of the emigrants was Robert Cadwaladr "of Llanuwchllyn" who was decended from the lineage of the Prices from Rhiwlas . His great grandfather had a home in Llangywer and his grandfather after him; his father Cadwaladr ap Robert had land in the parish of Llanycil as well, but it was not before the time of Robert Cadwaladr himself that we hear about Llanuwchllyn. Robert Cadwaladr married Jane, the daughter of [John ap Evan of] Penmaen in Llanycil - she belonging to a family of nobility. They had several children, and some of them were baptised in Llanuwchllyn ,some in Llangower and others in Llanycil. In 1698 Cadwaladr, their eldest son (who was born in 1673 and was baptised in Llanuwchllyn) went across to Pennsylvania and his brother Morris with him ; and in 1700 they were followed not only by two other brothers and their sister Elizabeth, but also by the old man their father. Like Robert Owen of Dolserau, Robert Cadwaladr died in America after a short time." (contributed by Elfed Owen)
Elfed Owen also contributes the following information: Jane John's father, John ap Evan of Penmaen left a will written Aug 1696., He left legacies to son Cadwalader John, Griffith John, Wm John, Rowland John, Gwen John , Catherine John and wife Margaret. Exec Gwen John (widow) and son in law Robert Cadwaladr of Llanuwchllyn. John ap Evan's son Cadwalader John of Llanycil, Bala also left a will written March 1723 - legacies left to sister Gwen John Evan and to brother in law Robert Cadwalader of Llanuwchllyn and to Cadwalader John's wife. This shows that Robert Cadwalader is alive in 1723 and living in Wales, perhaps never having emigrated to America. However this is in conflict with Howard Jenkins' notation of the marriage certificates of his children which calls him Robert Cadwalader deceased in the 1710s. There is also a Jane John whose death is recorded in the Llanuwchllyn parish records in 1695 who may or may not be the wife of Robert Cadwalader (which would explain why she is left out of her father's will but is again in conflict with Jenkins). Robert Cadwalader and Jane's children (as listed below) are all recorded in the parish records except for Nicholas. This makes the conflicts difficult to resolve. The possibility exists that there may be two Robert Cadwaladers. In any case the wife of the one whose children go to Pennsylvania appears to be named Jane.
Children of ROBERT CADWALLADER and JANE JOHN EVAN are:
2. i CADWALLADER EVANS ROBERTS, b. 1673, Penllyn, Wales; d. May 07, 1731, Gwynedd, Philadelphia, PA (small pox).

Generation No. 2
2. CADWALLADER ROBERTS (ROBERT CADWALADER) was born 1673 in Llanuwchllyn (place of baptism on 1 Jun 1673), Wales, and died May 07, 1731 in Gwynedd, Philadelphia, PA (small pox). He married ELEANOR HUMPHREY June 09, 1714 in Home of Rowland Ellis, Merion twp, PA, daughter of HUMPHREY ELLIS and JANE DAVID. She was born October 17, 1693, and died 1755.
Historical Collections of Gwynedd by H.M. Jenkins, (1897): Cadwalader Roberts, eldest son of Robert Cadwalader, b. in Wales, in 1673, immigrated, probably, in 1698, and settled in Gwynedd. In 1710, he bought land, 140 acres, of Robert John, on or closely adjoining the site of the borough of North Wales. All the accounts and traditions describe him as a man highly esteemed for his benevolence. He m. 4th mo. 9, 1714, Eleanor Ellis (b. 8th mo. 17, 1693), dau. of Humphrey and Jane Ellis, of Merion (she is called in the marriage certificate Ellin Humphrey), and he (Cadwalader) d. 3d mo., 7, 1731, of small pox at Gwynedd. His estate was settled by his widow as administratrix, letters being issued to her, dated May 31, 1731. Eleanor m. a second time, Rowland Hugh, of Gwynedd and d. 1755. Burial: May 09, 1731
His name first appears on a marriage certificate 22 Mar 1699 which leads us to believe he came over with brother Morris on the "Robert and Elizabeth" in 1698 with the other early Gwynedd settlers. However there is no record of him owning land until 1710. His name is on the subscription paper for building a new meeting house built in 1712 at Gwynedd.
Abstract of the marriage certificate: Cadwallader Roberts, Gwynedd, yeoman m. Ellen Humphrey, Merion at the dwelling place of Rowland Ellis, 4th mo 9, 1714. Wit: Morris, Nicholas, John, Rowland, Evan, Ellis and Eliza Roberts; John Humphrey and 53 others. His marriage took place in Rowland Ellis' house in Merion, afterwards the house of Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress.
ELEANOR HUMPHREY: Her last name is Ellis in H.M. Jenkins' book (1897) as her father is named Humphrey Ellis. Ellin Humphrey is her name on the marriage certificate. After her husband died of small pox, she became administratrix of his estate, letters being issued to her 31 May 1731.
Children of CADWALLADER ROBERTS and ELEANOR HUMPHREY are:
11. i. REBECCA ROBERTS, b. May 14, 1715, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; d. December 1795.
12. ii. ROBERT ROBERTS, b. December 18, 1719, Gwynedd, Philadelphia, PA; d. Abt. 1760, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia Co., PA.
3. MORRIS ROBERTS (ROBERT CADWALADER) was born 1677 in Llanycil, Wales, and probably died in North Carolina. He married ELIZABETH ROBESON April 18, 1718 in Abington MM, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. She was of Abington, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.
Llangower Parish Records. Baptisms: Morris s/o Robert Cadwaladr and Jane -- 9 May 1677
Howard Jenkins (1897): Morris Roberts, son of Robert Cadwalader, b. in Wales, immigrated, probably with his brother Cadwalader, about 1698, settled in Gwynedd (where he was, from the entries in Ellis Roberts' memorandum book, as early as 1704), m. 2d mo. 18, 1718, Elizabeth Robeson of Abington. In 1734, he applied to Gwynedd Monthly meeting for a certificate to revmove to North Carolina, and probably went there. This is a very early date to move to North Carolina, as the Piedmont was not yet settled.
Some excerpts from the Gwynedd MM minutes:
At Our Monthly Meeting held at Gwynedd the 25th 1st mo 1718: 3rd, Application made in behalf of Morris Robert for a Certificate in Order to proceed in Marriage with Elizabeth Robeson on belonging to Abington Monthly Meeting who requesting it might be prepared and signed by the Appointment of this Meeting: Giving his reasons viz that two Monthly Meetings fall out at Abington before our Next, this Meeting after Consideration condescends, and Appoints Evan Evans and Hugh Foulk to make Necessary Inquiry and write one - the Same to be signed by the order of this Meeting by Owen Evans, Cadwalader Evans, Robert Jones, John Humphrey, Abram Dawes and Meredith David and the Friends Appointed to Draw the Same.

10. vi. SOPHIA ROBERTS, b. Abt. 1730, of Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia Co., PA; d. of Oley twp., Berks Co., PA.
4. JOHN ROBERTS (ROBERT CADWALADER) was born 1681 (Christening: September 11, 1681, Llanycil, Wales), and died 1772 in Montgomery Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. He married ELIZABETH EDWARDS August 07, 1706 in Merion twp., Philadelphia Co., PA, daughter of WILLIAM EDWARD and KATHERIN. She was born Abt. 1684 in Wales, and died August 12, 1745 in Montgomery twp., Montgomery Co., PA.
Llanycil PR. Baptisms: (apparently there is an earlier John who dies in infancy) John s/o Robert Cadwaladr and Jane -- ? January 1678; John s/o Robert Cadwaladr of Penybryn Isa -- 11 September 1681
Clarence Roberts (1940): John Roberts, son of Cadwalader; b. abt 1677 in Wales, d. 1772 in Montgomery township, Philadelphia Co., PA; m. 6-7-1706 (presumably at Merion MH) Elizabeth Edward dau. of William Edward of Merion. John Roberts emigrated with his parents from Wales. He settled at first in Oxford township, Philadelphia county, where he was living at the time of his marriage; but in 1711, he was living in Montgomery twp., when he signed a petition for the legal settling of the route of a road to the mills on the Pennypack.
Howard Jenkins (1897): John Roberts, of Montgomery, son of Robert Cadwalader, b. abt 1677, d. 1773, immigrated, from Wales, with his parents. He settled first in Oxford twp., Philadelphia, and while there m. 6th mo. 7, 1706, Elizabeth Edward, of Merion. He subsequently removed to Montgomery, and his name is attached in 1711, to a petition of Gwynedd and Montgomery residents for the legal settling of the route of a road to the mills on Pennypack. His will, dated 5th mo. 15, 1763, was proved Sept 30, 1773.
About the Marriage Certificate (Haverford, now Radnor MM records):
The related men sign directly below the bride and groom: Caddr Roberts, Morris Roberts, Nicolas Roberts, Ellis Lewis, Wm Edward, Evan Robert, John Robert, Ellis Robert, Wm Robert, David Jones, Edwd William, Rowland Roberts, David Hugh, John Roberts, Evan Griffith, David Gethin, Owen Morris, Richd Jones
The related women sign the column to the left of the one above: Jane Lewis, Jane Roberts, Jane Evan, Jane Jones, Anne Jones, Ellin Jones, Anne Lewis, Grace ffoulke, Jane Roberts, Sarah William, Esther Roberts, Jane Evan, Cath Evan, Gainor Roberts, Jane Roberts, Eliza: Hugh, Eliza: Jones, Mary Jones, Jane Jones, Mary Morris, Anne Thomas, Eliza: Thomas
The John, Ellis and Wm Robert (no s at the end) are probably brothers and not necessarily related to John Roberts. Evan Robert is thought to be from yet another family (he is a 1698 settler of Gwynedd and the son of Robert Ellis -- the Ellis Robert could be his brother instead of the the brother of John and Wm). His sisters are supposed to be named Margaret and Elizabeth, but no one of those names signs. Instead we have Jane Lewis (a sister married to Ellis Lewis perhaps?), two more Jane Roberts and an Esther and a Gainor Roberts. There is no Robert Cadwalader or Jane Cadwalader. After 1715 (later than this marriage) Welsh women at Gwynedd always use their husband's last name as far as I am aware.
I know of no document in Pennsylvania containing Robert Cadwalader's name. His coming over with a wife seems in Jenkins' book to be family tradition. If he came to Pennsylvania, it appears he returned to Wales.

Notes for ELIZABETH EDWARDS: A victim of the fatal and malignant epidemic of 1745. According to "Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania" by T.A. Glenn, she was a daughter of William ap Edward. He was, at the time of his removal to Pennsylvania, a resident of the township of Ucheldre, parish of Llanfor (anciently written Llanvawr, Llanfawr, etc.), in Penllyn, co. Merioneth. In March 1672-3, he was tenant of a farm called Tythyn y Corne, alias Tythyn y Gessel, belonging to Evan Lloyd ap Rhydderch, of Garn, in the parish of Llanfor, and probably continued to live thereon until 1682. William ap Edward or Bedward, was a son of Edward ap John, of Cynlas, near Bala. William Edward with his wife Jane (verch John ap Edward) and daughters Elizabeth and Katherin, arrived in 1682 on the ship "Lyon". The "Edward Jones" Merion township draft shows 153 1/4 acres in his name and that of his fellow passenger Edward Rees, with the division line partly drawn. Wiliam ap Edward's half extended from that line to the Schuylkill with the courses of the side lines changed to conform to a small stream that flowed into the river and on this tract he doubtless built his temporary cabin or dugout in the fall of 1682, in which the family continued to live until their removal to Blockley. The 100 acres of Liberty land, surveyed in Blockley 2 mo. 23, 1692, as above related, were conveyed by the owners to William ap Edward 10 mo. 27, 1693, which may approximate the date of his removal. Having purchased other rights to Liberty land, he obtained a patent for the whole in one tract of 207 acres nine perches 3 mo. 4, 1702. The present suburban town of Overbrook is upon this land. William Edward conveyed his original purchase of 76 1/2 acres in Merion to Hugh Roberts, 6 mo. 17, 1694, and his 75 acres in Goshen to Robert William Jan 21, 1703. He continued to reside upon his Blockley plantation until his death in 1714, having devised the same to his only son Edward William, whose wife Ellin or Eleanor was the daughter of David Lawrence of Haverford, William ap Edwards's first wife, Katherin, was a daughter of Robert ap Hugh.
Children of JOHN ROBERTS and ELIZABETH EDWARDS are:

He immigrated from Wales about 1700. He was a minister amongst Friends and visited Wales as a preacher. He established a tavern in Montgomery twp. His will is dated 12 Jul 1749 and was probated Oct 1749. He leaves to daughter in law Hannah Jones two small plots of land with the stipulation that she does not set up a competing tavern. He also mentions daughter in law Mary Davis, and son in law James Williams. His son Eldad was appointed executor. His tavern was located on the east corner of Bethlehem Pike and Upper State Rd. (now a gas station, diagonally across from the Mall). A competing tavern, owned by the Bartholomew family stood across Upper State Rd. where Kinkos now is. The first school in Montgomery twp. was on land donated by Rowland Roberts in 1727. He also owned the land across Bethlehem Pike where the Methodist Church used to be.

Ann was a Quaker minister who traveled with her husband Rowland Roberts to other Meetings including back to Wales. She was Ann Bennet, widow when she married him from Abington meeting, PA.
After her marriage to Rowland Roberts, she joined Gwynedd Meeting:
Att our monthly meeting held att Gwynedd the 29 of 1th mo 1720 Ann Robert produced a certificate from Abington monthly meeting directed to this meeting was read well received ordered to be recorded
Howard Jenkins, p 91: "Ann Roberts, who died on the 9th of 4th month (Nov 4), 1750 (She was seventy-three at her death.), was a native of Wales and had been a minister for fifty years. She was a widow, Ann Bennett of Abington, when she married Rowland Roberts, and removed to Gwynedd. "
from The Friend (Philadelphia) Vol 31, p. 101-102 (1850)
We cannot better begin our account of this Friend than by introducing the opening of the memorial of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, concerning her: --
"Although it is beyond a doubt, that he who putteth off his armour, after a faithful discharge of the part assigned him , i sin a far more secure and happy state than he who girdeth it on; yet it must sensibly affect the thoughtful spectator to see those who have laboured faithfully in the cause of Truth, taken away, while but few are coming on to supply their places. This seems much the case with us at present. Divers worthy Friends, both Ministers and Elders, have of late been removed from us by death, of which blessed number was this dear handmaid of the Lord; -- in a grateful remembrance of whose real worth and manifold services in the church, we are disposed, in the love of Truth, to write the following lines as a memorial: --
She was convinced of the blessed Truth in her native country, Wales, when young, which incurred her father's heavy displeasure; but in time he became reconciled to her. Some years after her convincement, [a little before 1700] she came over into this country, where she received a gift of the ministry, and by a diligent improvement thereof together with the influence of a pious, unspotted life, she was made useful in her generation, and a blessing to many. Her love and compassion for the widow, the fatherless, and those in affliction, appeared by her often visiting them. She was one of the wise in heart, who not only could see, but foresee, the enemy in his approaches, and would rouse and excite his fellow-soldiers to use their utmost endeavours to repel his attempts, which was often done with desirable success. She was zealously concerned for maintaining Christian discipline, -- a steay pillar in the church, so established as not to be shaken or drawn from her uprightness by any cause."
Upon her removal to America, she appears to have settled within the limits of Abington Monthly Meeting, where as Ann Bennett we find her for years valuable as a minister, and active and helpful in the discipline of the church.
In the Eleventh Month, 1719, she was married to Rowland Roberts, of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, a Friend of good standing and esteem amongst Friends, and afterwards her fellow helper in the ministry. The Friends of Gwynedd, whither she now removed with her husband, were at that time much in the practice of manifesting their religious concern towards their members, by appointing committees to visit them in their families. Into this labour Ann was soon introduced. Of her service therein, her memorial says:--
"She had an excellent talent for the weighty service of visiting Friends' families, and at those opportunities was frequently favoured with something suitable to every state and condition, which was attended with happy effects, especailly on the youth. Buth such indeed was the Divine savour, which usually accompanied her discourse and conversation, one could rarely be an hour with her without sensible edification." Her memorial continues:--
"Her first coming to reside here [Gwynedd] was very seasonable, as we had very few public Friends amongst us. There seemed an extensive field before her, in which she laboured fervently; tenderly inviting those who stood afar off to draw nigh -- querying with them whether they knew what the Lord had for them to do? It is evident that her labours in the service of the Gospel were blessed, for about that time our meeting was favoured with heavenly visitations, and many had their mouths oened to speak of God's goodness to their souls. Thereby was verified what she had declared at our meeting, before she came and dwelt among us, though it seemed improbable, when spoken, and many doubted the accomplishment of it. To the babes in the ministry, she, who had a large share of experience in the work, was not wanting to administer suitable precaution and advice.
Although her labour was large in the meeting she belonged to, and in those in the neighbourhood, yet she was not released thereby from more distant service. Early in the year 1723 she was liberated by her Friends at home to pay a religious visit to the southern provinces in company with her dear friend Susanna Morris. They attended the Quarterly Meeting, held in Philadelphia, Third mo. 4th, and soon after proceeded on their visit, being on horseback. They attended the Yearly Meeting for Maryland, held at West River from the 1st to the 5th of Fourth month, wherein their service was great and acceptable.
After this meeting, they appear to have proceeded down the eastern shore, and took passage on a pretty large boat to cross the Chesapeake, having their horses with them, intending, after reaching the western side of the Bay, to proceed to Carolina. A storm coming on, they were driven far out to sea, and on returning towards the shore, were in great danger of being wrecked, being driven over a sand bank. The sea broke so over the vessel, the hatches of which had been left behind, that their food was soaked in the salt water and spoiled, and their horses were also without food. A grassy island being near, where the boat lay, the master put the horses into the sea, expecting they would go to it and feed, but they took another course, and although injured during the storm, were soon seen to reach a sandy beach. It was the third day before the human passengers were able to reach the shore. Then, a boat having come to their rescue, landed them at the very place whither their horses, providentially directed, had gone. The two exhausted women had six miles to walk to the nearest dwelling. But the Lord took care of them, and the woman of the house, a widow, received them with a salutation of love, and treated them with great kindness and hospitality. Their horses were found three days afterwards near by, and they could but see the hand of their gracious and merciful Father in Heaven, in keeping the animals for so many days in that place, where they were much persecuted by musquitoes, when the way was entirely open for them to wander far inland.
Many other hardships they had to endure, and when they left this desolate place to go towards Perquimans in Carolina, they had no guide but their Father in heaven. But he supported them in the prospect, and in the language of Susanna Morris, "forever blessed be his most holy Name and power, our hearts were filled with thankfulness and cheerfulness to set forward. We had a prosperous journey, and got well there."
Susanna's horse eventually died of the injuries he received in the storm, but Ann's carried her safely home to her family."

[Phila. Will Book "I", p.277.]--Roberts p. 16
In his book, Clarence Roberts notes several times the use of the term "son-in-law" to mean step-son as well as son-in-law. This happens above when Anne Roberts refers to Eldad Roberts, the son of Rowland Roberts and therefore her step-son, as her son-in-law.
Her children are mentioned below in the wills of her "sister" Eleanor (William) Roberts who married John Roberts (of a different Roberts line, not this one)
ROBERTS, ELEANOR. Gwynedd, Philadelphia County. Widow. September 2, 1725. November 16, 1725. D. 436. Sister Anne Roberts, cousin Katherine Roberts, brother Ellis Roberts. Nephews: William, Daniel and James Williams (their mother's name is not given and she is not a legatee). Sarah Pugh; Mary and Hannah Bennet. The wife of Humphrey Parker (name not given). Executors: Rowland Roberts and nephew Daniel Williams. Overseers: Evan Evans and John Jones. Witnesses: Thomas Wiet and Francis Griffith.
It is not clear if Eleanor is a sister of Anne's or of her first husband James Williams as her last name is William when she marries John Roberts in the Abington MM records. She mentions the children of Henry Bennett as well as those of James Williams. Clarence Roberts assumes she is James Williams' sister.

Notes for JOHN ROBERTS: List of Deaths from Samuel and Cadwallader Foulke's Memorandum Books (Jenkins ch. 12) Sep. 11th 1816, died Mary Roberts, wife of John Roberts, esq., aged about 57 years. - must be someone else's wife? 1823, June 17th, died John Roberts, Esq., of Montgomery, aged near 73.
Brought up the distinguished preacher Samuel Aaron and also Benjamin F. Hancock.
Howard Jenkins (1897): 'Squire John Roberts was doubtless the most important merchant in Gwynedd, for many years. His store was at the Spring-House, a particularly good place for business in the old times. He began there soon after the close of the Revolution, some of his accounts that I have seen being of so early a date as 1786. His papers show that he dealt largely in flaxseed and linen, buying the former of the farmers and exporting it, from Philadelphia, to the Irish ports, --Belfast, Dublin, Newry, and Cork. In return he received the linens. His operations were sometimes directly with the Irish commission houses, but more frequently he conducted them through Caleb and Owen Foulke, of Philadelphia. The shipments each way were quite large: whether they were ultimately at a profit to John may be doubted. Months were required for returns, each way, and the various charges for insurance, freight, storage, commissions, etc., were about 30 per cent of the prices realized on the flaxseed. John closed his business at the Spring-House in 1794, by selling out to John Hubbs, for whom his brother-in-law, Amos Lewis, of Upper Dublin, became security. John Hubbs did not prove to be a successful store-keeper, and did not long continue.
'Squire John Roberts
'Squire John Roberts, born in 1750, was for many years one of the most conspicuous figures in Montgomery and Gwynedd. I have already mentioned his store-keeping at Spring House. After selling out there he removed to his Montgomery farm, where he permanently remained. He had been appointed a justice of the peace, in 1791, by Governor Mifflin, his commission authorizing him to act for the townships of Hatfield, Montgomery, and Gwynedd, and he continued to act in that capacity until his death, which occurred June 17, 1823. He was a man of very considerable force and energy, a marked character in whatever he undertook. Samuel Aaron, afterwards the distinguished preacher and teacher, was "brought up" by him, and so was Benjamin F. Hancock. "Tom Wolf," afterward Dr. Antrim Foulke's faithful servitor, lived with him. He is remembered by one of the older Friends, now surviving, as coming to Gwynedd Meeting occasionally, in winter time, in his sleigh, a tall man, dressed in gray. He transacted a large amount of business, including the settlement of estates, etc. His executors were Cadwallader Foulke and William Foulke, and a very serious part of their duty was the settlement of his ownership of a tract of 751 acres on Bentley's Creek, Bradford county, near Towanda. 'Squire John had bought it, in 1808, of James Chapman, who held under a Pennsylvania patent, but the lands were occupied by settlers under the Connecticut claim, and the 'Squire was obliged in 1815 to establish his rights by suits of ejectment. It was not until 1830, seven years after his death, that the business was concluded. He was never married; his estate, after some bequests, went to collateral heirs.

Notes for JOSEPH FOULKE:
from "Fair Land Gwynedd" by Phil Johnson Ruth (1991):
Recollection of Gwynedd Schools in the Late 1700's from Quaker minister and educator Joseph Foulke (1786-1863):
"My earliest recollection of schools which I attended was at Gwynedd meeting. There wa no house for the purpose, but what was called 'the little meeting-house" was used. An old tottering man by the name of Samuel Evans was the teacher. The reading books were the Bible and Testament: we had Dilworth's Spelling Book and Dilworth's Assistant or Arithmetic. Grammar was a thing hardly thought of; there was, however, a small part of the spelling-book called 'A New Guide to the English Tongue', and a few of the older pupils learned portions of this by rote, and would occasionally recite to the master, but the substance appeared to be equally obscure both to master and scholar.
My next schooling was in 1795, in the house late the property of William Buzby, on the Bethlehem Road, above the Spring-House. It was a kind of family school, taught by Hannah Lukens. I next went to Joshua Foulke, my father's elder brother, and an old man. He taught in the log schoolhouse, near the eighteen-mile stone on the Bethlehem road. My father, with the help of his neighbors, built this house [about 1798], on a lot set apart for this purpose, at the southern extremity of his premises. This log school-house stood about thirty years, and besides Joshua Foulke, we had for teachers William Coggins, Hannah Foulke, Benjamin Albertson, Hugh Foulke (my brother), John Chamberlain, Christian Dull (Jr.), Daniel Price, and Samual Jones (I have probably not named all, or given them in the order in which they came).
The Free School of Montgomery, however, was more popular. The salary there, $160 a year, secured more competent teachers than other schools in the neighborhood. I can remember when the teacher's pay was from a dollar to ten shilings per quarter for each scholar, and he obtained his board by going about from house to house among his employers, and it was a remark that people would trust a teacher to instruct their children to whom they would not lend a horse!"
