18. MARGARET3 WILLIAMS (THOMAS2, JOHN1) was born April 25, 1721, and died Aft. 1787. She married JOHN HANK Aft. February 1736/37, son of JOHN HANK and SARAH EVANS. He was born September 20, 1712 in Whitemarsh twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died 1780 in Of Rockingham Co., VA.
Notes for JOHN HANK:
- H.M. Jenkins (1897): "The precise name of the head of the Hank family who thus removed, is uncertain, but Mr. David Lincoln, of Birdsboro, Berks county, in a letter to me, September 1883, thinks it was John, and says: 'He lived on the Perkiomen turnpike, six miles east of Reading, in Exeter township, and within half a mile of Mordecai Lincoln, great-great-grandfather of the President. This John Hank, with John and Benjamin Lincoln, moved to Fayette county, and from there Mr. Hank went southward.'
- As to a removal, first, to Fayette county, I do not know; but as has already been noted (p. 208), John Hank was in Rockingham county, Va., at least as early as 1787, when his daughter Hannah married Asa Lupton. That this John was the one described by Mr. Lincoln is probable, or he may have been a son of the Berks county man, for the latter was in all probablility the same John Hank who was born 1712, the son of the Whitemarsh yeoman and Sarah Evans of Gwynedd."
- http://user.erols.com/condrada/:
- "Mordecai Lincoln's son John and Joseph's brother, John, became fast friends and both eventually migrated to Augusta county, Virginia (now Rockingham) in the early 1770s. The children of Joseph Hanks, his brother John, and Michael Ludwig all became friends, so it was natural that a marriage would occur among them."
- Many of the John Hank m. Margaret Williams line are from Wallace Ewing's Rootsweb Worldconnect database.
- Note that John's brother Joseph has been proposed as the grandfather of Nancy Hanks, the mother of President Lincoln. However, documents and DNA evidence so far supports an origin for this line in Richmond County, Virginia, not Berks Co., PA. No Y DNA test has been done on this line yet though.
Children of MARGARET WILLIAMS and JOHN HANKS are:
- i. JOHN4 HANKS, b. 1738.
- ii. CALEB HANKS, b. 1752.
- 63. iii. WILLIAM HANKS, b. Abt. 1755, Berks Co., PA.
- 64. iv. MARGARET HANK, b. April 10, 1755, Berks Co., PA; d. September 22, 1797, Greenbrier Co., VA (now WV).
- 65. v. HANNAH HANKS, b. Abt. 1760, Rockingham Co., VA; d. September 18, 1807, Hampshire Co., VA.
Descendants of Unknown William or Williams
The Richard and John Williams line of Gwynedd township...
Generation No. 1
1. UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR1 WILLIAMS was born Abt. 1650.
Notes for UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR WILLIAMS:
- I have seen the names William Williams and Humphrey Williams proposed as parents of Richard and John, but have yet to see where these names come from. It does not appear likely that Richard and John are children of Robert Williams of Uwchlan, particularly if John marries Catherine Morgan in 1707/8. It is known that the marriage or Robert Williams to Gwen Cadwalader took place in 1691, which would scarcely give room for a son with a marriage date in 1707/8. Furthermore Robert has a son John born later, who marries Jane Jones. Richard is not a name used in any subsequent generations of the Uwchlan family and we know John is Richard's brother (John names him in his Will).
- Other facts about Williams names in Gwynedd and Towamencin townships
- In 1728 a Daniel Williams signs a petition to form Towamencin township. Also signing are Daniel, John and Edward Morgan. Most of the other signers are of German and Dutch ancestry.
- 1734 Gwynedd township tax list:
- Lewis Williams, William Williams and Catherine Williams (John's widow). Question: Is this Lewis Williams the son of Robert Williams of Uwchlan?
It is possible that John and Richard are the son of a man with the first name William instead of the last name Williams.
Children of UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR WILLIAMS are:
- 2. i. RICHARD WILLIAMS, b. Abt. 1690, Merion twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA (?).
- ii. JOHN WILLIAMS, b. Abt. 1685; m. CATHERINE MORGAN, January 13, 1706/07, Radnor MM, Chester Co., PA; b. Abt. 1690.
- Notes for JOHN WILLIAMS:
- Probably born in Wales or perhaps in Merion twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA
- He died on 9 Jul 1726 in Gwynedd twp. and left a will date 7 Nov 1726 (I know, the will is after he died, I am following http://www.charleston.quik.com/jeffkat/d23.htm#P23)
- He is described as a Yeoman.
- His will names wife Catherine and children Owen, Ibill (Isabel?), Elizabeth and Jane and his brother Richard. Wife Catherine is the executor.
- Overseers: Richard William, Evan Evans, Evan Owen and John (Jno) Evans
- Witnesses: William Hugh and John Jones.
- Not believed to be a son of Robert Williams and Gwen Cadwallader of Uwchlan. There is another John (m. Jane Jones) and his marriage to Catherine occurs too early to be Robert and Gwen's son.
- The John Williams who marries Catherine Edwards, widow, at Gwynedd in 1714 is of Montgomery, so probably not this one.
- 1718: "John Williams at a certain time hath been too much overtaken with the essense of strong liquor, he being present at this Meeting confessed the same and condemned himself and the Spirit that lead him thereunto with a firm resolution to take better care in the future." (Gwynedd MM minutes - could be John of Montgomery above instead of him)
Generation No. 2
2. RICHARD2 WILLIAMS (UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR1) was born Abt. 1690 in Merion twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA (?). He married MARGARET September 07, 1717 in Gwynedd MM, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. She was born Abt. 1697.
- See Wedding Certificate
- Richard may have died by 1734 as he is not on the Gwynedd tax list, but son William is. Another possibility is a removal to Bucks County (see discussion of possible son Richard below).
- Margaret: 1753 Disowned for joining Montgomery Baptist Church (perhaps)
Children of RICHARD WILLIAMS and MARGARET are:
- 3. i. WILLIAM WILLIAMS, b. 1719, Gwynedd MM, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; d. September 11, 1773, Cane Creek, Alamance Co., NC.
- ii. SARAH WILLIAMS, b. 1718, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.
- iii. Question: Is the Richard Williams who marries Margaret (perhaps Jones) and leaves a Will in Loudoun Co., VA in 1797 also a child of Richard's? His son Enos (b. 1759) is buried at Fairfax MM. Other children migrate to Smyth Co., VA. This Richard was said to be of Bucks Co., PA when he bought land in Virginia.
- Will (Loudoun Co., VA) names wife Margaret and children Jinkin, Joseph, James, Mary Shrieves, Enos and a grandson William George. The will states explicitly that Margaret is the mother of Enos. Enos inherited all his father's land.
- 1762 - A deed records that Richard Williams, farmer from Bucks Co., PA bought 100 A on Kittocton (now Catoctin) Creek and 400 A on Kittocton Mountain for 220 pounds Pennsylvania money from Edward Norton.
- This Richard is not the Richard who married Margaret Eaton in 1717. Note the birth date of son Enos in 1759 is too late for this Margaret who was already a widow in 1717.
